The Southern States Energy Board (SSEB) elected Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González-Colón as its Chair for the 2026–2027 term during its Annual Board Business Session on September 21, 2026.

“I am honored to chair the Southern States Energy Board and work with governors and legislators across our region,  from Puerto Rico to every member state and territory, to advance reliable, affordable energy. Our region’s resources, infrastructure and expertise are tremendous assets, and I look forward to building on them, sharing solutions across jurisdictions, and preparing our energy systems to meet the opportunities ahead,” said González-Colón.

González-Colón succeeds Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, who chaired the Board for 2025–2026 and hosted this year’s gathering. The election took place during SSEB’s 66th Annual Meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi, bringing together governors, legislators, regulators, industry leaders, researchers, and federal partners under the theme “The Southern Power Plan: Strategic Resources. Shared Advantages.” Discussions focused on the South’s role in meeting the nation’s growing energy needs and advancing reliable, affordable energy to support economic growth across the region.

González-Colón is the second Governor of Puerto Rico to serve as SSEB Chair, following Governor Pedro J. Rosselló, who held the position from 1995 to 1996. The election continues the Board’s tradition of gubernatorial leadership in advancing regional cooperation on energy and environmental issues. The Board’s work connects energy policy and technology with economic development and quality of life across its member states and territories.
