Engineering solutions to reduce emissions from cement manufacturing
Led by the Southern States Energy Board, this front-end engineering and design (FEED) study is developing an integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) system for cement manufacturing. The project combines capture system design with transportation and underground storage planning to support future commercial deployment.
Carbon Capture Technology
The study will use Air Liquide technology to capture and process carbon dioxide (CO₂) from cement production. The system operates primarily on electricity, does not require flammable chemicals, and can manage common air pollutants.
Storage & Environmental Planning
The project includes plans for a stratigraphic test well to support a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Underground Injection Control Class VI permit for permanent CO₂ storage.
Additional work includes pipeline engineering, a storage field development plan, and a life cycle analysis to evaluate the integrated system. Environmental planning includes preparation of an Environmental Information Volume under the National Environmental Policy Act.
Project Status
A permanent project site remains under evaluation. The study is intended to establish the engineering and planning foundation for a future integrated capture, transportation, and storage system.
Project Partners
The Board leads the project with Advanced Resources International, Air Liquide, and Crescent Resource Innovation, with additional support from Environmental Resources Management and Sargent & Lundy.
