New Study Released: Preliminary Evaluation of Offshore Transport and Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide (October 2013)

On October 24, 2013, the Southern States Energy Board and Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission jointly released a report entitled Preliminary Evaluation of Offshore Transport and Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide. The report explores geological and technical topics that should be considered in developing and applying a robust legal and regulatory framework that will facilitate the design and deployment of successful offshore CO2 storage projects. The report has been prepared to inform and assist policymakers and regulators who will authorize and regulate potential offshore projects, operators who will design and implement potential projects, and the wide range of stakeholders with interest in these projects. This work is supported within the SECARB program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory and cost-sharing partners.

The 2012 U.S. Carbon Utilization and Storage Atlas, Fourth Edition Released

On December 19, 2012, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released the Fourth Edition of The U.S. 2012 Carbon Utilization and Storage Atlas. The document provides an update of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage potential across the majority of the United States and portions of Canada. The National Energy Technology Laboratory updates the Atlas every two years in collaboration with the Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSPs).

CO2 Injection Begins at SECARB Anthropogenic Test

The Southern States Energy Board and SECARB Partners are proud to report that CO2 injection is underway at the Anthropogenic Test site in Southwest Alabama. This accomplishment marks another significant milestone for the team as it establishes the world’s first fully integrated project involving CO2 capture of anthropogenic (man-made) CO2 from a coal-fired power plant, transportation via a dedicated pipeline, and geologic storage. Injection operations began on Monday morning, August 20, 2012. According to a Techline issued by the U.S. Department of Energy earlier today, the project “will help demonstrate the feasibility of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), considered by most energy experts as an important option for meeting the challenge of helping to reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions linked to potential climate change.”

NETL Releases The North American Carbon Storage Atlas 2012

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER), and the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) are proud to release the North American Carbon Storage Atlas (NACSA), which was produced under the leadership of the North American Carbon Atlas Partnership (NACAP). This Atlas provides a coordinated overview of carbon capture and storage (CCS) potential across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The primary purpose of the Atlas is to show the location of large stationary carbon dioxide (CO2) emission sources and the locations and storage potential of various geological storage sites. This Atlas is a first attempt at providing a high-level overview of the potential for large-scale carbon storage in North America. As each country makes progress in the dynamic technology of CCS, additional resources will become available that allow for a more thorough effort to identify large stationary CO2 emission sources and potential storage sites.

IOGCC/SSEB Task Force Reports the Need for National CO2 Pipeline Infrastructure

A SECARB Pipeline Transportation Task Force released its final report, A Policy, Legal, and Regulatory Evaluation of the Feasibility of a National Pipeline Infrastructure for the Transport and Storage of Carbon Dioxide. In this report, the Task Force examines the legal and regulatory environment surrounding CO2 pipelines and transport.

Southern Company Construction Update: CO2 Capture Unit at Plant Barry is on Schedule

On December 13, 2010, Southern Company issued “CCS News,” a newsletter which provides an update on the construction of a carbon dioxide (CO2) capture unit under construction at Alabama Power’s Plant Barry. CO2 Injection Begins at the SECARB Phase II Black Warrior Basin Coal Seam Project

The Southern States Energy Board and its SECARB partners are pleased to announce that the Phase II Black Warrior Basin Coal Seam Project is underway. On June 15, 2010, Jack Pashin, Ph.D. of the Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA) reported that carbon dioxide (CO2) injection, storage, and monitoring activities began at the field test site located near Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This is the fourth and final field test to be conducted under the SECARB Phase II Program.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for CO2 Capture Unit

On April 14, 2010, Alabama Power hosted a Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Groundbreaking Celebration at the James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant in Bucks, Alabama. During the ceremony, Alabama Power, Southern Company, and its partners broke ground for a carbon dioxide capture unit that will be added to Plant Barry as part of an integrated CO2 capture, transportation, and geologic storage project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

SECARB Team Announces Significant Advances in Carbon Capture, Transportation, and Storage Projects

Today, the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB) team announced significant advances in the commercialization of integrated carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, transportation, and storage technologies. The announcement occurred during the United States Energy Association (USEA) briefing on “Evaluating CO2 Storage Options in the Southeast Region” as part of its Carbon Capture and Sequestration Briefing Series in Washington, DC.

SECARB Phase III Early Test Receives Recognition for Furthering CCS Technology and Meeting G-8 Goals for Deployment

Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Techline recognizing the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership’s (SECARB) Phase III Early Test for furthering carbon dioxide capture (CO2) and storage (CCS) technology and meeting G-8 goals for deployment of 20 similar projects by 2010. The Early Test is the 5th project worldwide to reach the CO2 injection volume of one million tonnes and the first in the United States.

Press Release: 5/21/2009

On May 21, 2009, Southern Company issued a press release identifying the future site of the SECARB Phase III Anthropogenic Test and details regarding the integrated carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, transportation and injection project design. The CO2 will be captured (through a component paid for under separate funding) at Alabama Power Company’s Plant Barry, located in Bucks, Alabama. The SECARB research team will transport the CO2 by pipeline approximately 10 miles and inject it into a saline geologic formation accessed from an area of the Citronelle Oil Field operated by Denbury Resources.
