SSEB convenes an advisory committee composed of gubernatorially appointed state emergency response planners, radiological health professionals and other knowledgeable officials to address issues associated with the transportation of nuclear waste through the southern states. Under a cooperative agreement sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, this Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee provides DOE with a regional perspective for the study of a broad range of institutional, legal and technical issues relevant to the transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.
Under a separate cooperative agreement, SSEB supports the activities of the Transuranic Waste Transportation Working Group, which provides DOE with a regional perspective on the impending shipments of transuranic waste.
